How do I apply my Smith & Warren Flexible Badge to a garment or hard surface?
Instructions for hook & loop, heat press, and adhesive tape applications.
Smith & Warren Flexible Badges replicate your metal badge as a durable patch alternative. Flexible badges are made from TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) to retain their shape and color for a long time. Application of your flexible badge to your chosen surface is quick and easy.
Choosing the Right Application Method
Smith & Warren offers three attachment methods for their flexible badges, each designed for specific surfaces and equipment. Here are three examples to review where each type of fastener might be used.
- Carrier or tactical vests are a great place for a hook-and-loop flexible badge.
- A polo shirt, or a t-shirt as part of a bike patrol unit, is perfect for a heat seal since the durable plastic sits flush on the shirt.
- A mobile phone case and a bike or horse helmet are two examples of hard surfaces for 3M™ double-sided adhesive attachment.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Here are the instructions to attach a flexible badge with the different attachment methods:
-
Hook & Loop Fasteners:
- Sew the loop (soft side) onto any garment to attach the badge.
- Securely press the hooks of the flex badge to the loop fastener.
- Additional loops are available for purchase, allowing you to transfer the flex badge to another garment.
-
Heat Activated Adhesive (Heat Press):
- Preheat the lower plate and garment for 5 seconds before application.
- Align the flexible badge on the garment without removing the membrane.
- Place an EVA/Silicone ironing pad between the plate and the badge to protect it during heating.
- Apply heat for 15-20 seconds at a temperature between 300-320°F (148-160°C) and a pressure of 29-36 psi (0.2-0.25 MPa).
- Carefully remove the membrane after heating for optimal adhesion.
-
3M™ Double-Sided Tape for Hard Surface Application:
- Clean and dry the hard surface before application.
- Apply the 3M™ double-sided tape provided with the flex badge.
- Press firmly on the badge to activate the adhesive to stick the flex badge to the surface.
By following these attachment methods, you can maintain the longevity and appearance of your Smith & Warren Flexible Badges, whether you're affixing them to garments or hard surfaces. Avoid excessive folding or pressure on the flex badges. Don’t store your garments beneath heavy objects or in tightly packed spaces where the pressure might flatten some of the 3D details of the flexible badge. This will keep your Smith & Warren Flexible Badge in great condition for years to come. If you have any questions, please contact us for more information.
